This summer the KDE project will once again participate in Google Summer of Code! Summer of Code will allow KDE to grow and bring in new developers to the community.

KDE will begin accepting student applications on March 29th, and interested students should check out the KDE Community wiki for a list of potential ideas. Of course, individual ideas not on that page are encouraged as well, so submitting a proposal based on a new KDE application or feature is great as well.

We are pleased to announce the Plasma Javascript Jam Session. This friendly competition will reward creators of the most original, interesting and beautiful Plasma widgets (Plasmoids) written in Javascript with some great prizes and community recognition.

KDE applications on Haiku

Continuing the theme of "KDE Everywhere", recently it was announced by the folks over at TiltOS that KDE applications are now available for download and use. TiltOS provides a repository and an easy to use application manager for the Haiku operating system, which is in turn aims to be an open source implementation of the BeOS operating system.

Credativ has supported the development of two more Akonadi resources - bringing more Groupware resources to upcoming releases of the KDE PIM suite. Read here for a quick Q&A about this.

The KDevelop team is proud to announce the seventh beta of KDevelop4. At the same time we're a bit sad as this beta also marks our drop-out of the KDE SC 4.4 release cycle. We feel that we didn't manage to get the needed features for the 4.4.0 release working properly and that we'll need a longer freeze period than what is available in the release cycle. We're now concentrating on getting the existing features shaped up and ready for release as well as fixing as many of the bugs as we can. No new features will be introduced into KDevelop anymore until the first release, which is currently aimed at end of March.

As explained on Userbase, Nepomuk is a promising new technology which aims to make the user's data easier to find. Not only through the now common search and indexing, but also by making use of more complex relationships between documents, contacts and all sorts of data. While the full potential of Nepomuk is still shrouded in mystery for most of us, for developers it is an exciting area of work where academic research and Free Software development come together. Nepomuk is looking for new developers, read on to find out how you can help!

Google Summer of Code has again been a huge success for KDE this year. 37 out of 38 projects were finished successfully. Much of the work done during these projects is already merged into trunk and will be available for the users with the KDE 4.4 release in January 2010. The PySide team is pleased to announce the first public release of PySide: Python for Qt. PySide is a project providing an LGPL'd set of Python bindings for the Qt framework.

On behalf of the KDevelop team I am happy to announce the Beta 4 release of KDevelop 4. This release includes some major new features, such as working sets (only available when building with KDE 4.3), integration of the quickopen functionality into the toolbar and a new perspective switcher (see the upper right corner of the mainwindow).
